Understanding Scripture Through Faith

Saving Faith and the Holy Spirit Are Necessary to Understand Scripture.

The Bible is indeed a book for Christians, but it is far more than just a religious text; it is the very revelation of God to humanity. For those who believe, the Scriptures open up with clarity, authority, and life-giving power because the Holy Spirit enables understanding and conviction. Without faith, the message of the Scriptures may appear perplexing or even foolish, as one discerns spiritual truths. This doesn’t mean the Bible lacks wisdom for all, but its deepest truths-about salvation, grace, and the kingdom of God-become clear only to those whose hearts are open to receive them through faith. As Paul wrote, “14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.” (1 Corinthians 2:14). The Holy Spirit inspired both the Old and New Testament writers and now sanctifies us, growing us spiritually and making us more like Christ (John 17:17; Romans 8:39)[2]. He interprets Scripture for us, connecting the dots within God’s Word and opening our eyes to its meaning, just as Jesus did for the disciples on the road to Emmaus (Luke 24:27).
